No, producing your own toys is not cost effective – but it is fun!

There is a tremendous amount of enjoyment and satisfaction to be had if you’re a designer and you make, package and sell your own figures. Keep in mind, while interesting, it is also a challenging process that requires a number of specific skill sets to pull off successfully. It is also extremely time consuming, requires a substantial workspace, and involves messy, toxic materials.

So many designers and artists that we’ve worked with simply don’t have the time or energy to invest in sculpting, making silicone molds, mixing resin and casting pieces, de-molding, cleaning and assembling the pieces, priming and the painting the pieces and then putting together the packaging. Designers often have full time jobs, and families, and an interest in doing what they do very well – designing.

Now, all that said, there are a lot of fabulous and talented toy makers around here that do produce and sell their own work. I strongly recommend trying it out for yourself, especially if you are a new designer looking to get your feet wet, or simply an interested and creative artist who like to learn new things. Start small, stay modest, and try not to get overwhelmed by how complex the process is. There are a lot of great resources online specifically targeted to sculptors and designers who are doing their own casting.
